Frequently Asked Questions

What are your specialties? Our specialties are:
Reactivity:
barking, lunging, growling, pulling hard on leash.
Aggression: possession, fear of strangers, “protecting” the house, biting, growling or snapping towards people, animals or things. Aggression resulting from overexcitement: jumping and biting you while you are walking outside, jumping and biting you from frustration or excitement.
Barking: at you, at people, things or animals outside, barking while in your yard etc.
Basic obedience training for the home: walking on a loose leash, heel, sit, down, stay, come, not jumping, being ok in a cage etc.
Sports: tricks, scent detection, basic obedience, basic competition obedience, parkour and agility. Agility classes are given through the Montreal Agility Club in the summer months (please check their website to register) but we can also give home agility programs (with some light equipment or things you can make at home depending on how much you want to practice and your level of interest).

What do you not do? We do not do systematic desensitization for separation anxiety. If you are wondering if your dog has separation anxiety or maybe just has some difficulty being alone we can help you understand the difference and know which one your dog has.
Difficulty being left alone is if your dog barks or destroys things in your home but eventually calms down and stays calm most of the time.
If your dog has true separation anxiety, and the entire time you are gone from your home, your dog is unable to be calm then you need to see a specialist (we can suggest some).

How does it work? You start with an initial consultation where we answer all your questions and give you exercises to practice and get started. We then make a program tailored to your needs and you choose how many consultations from a package you would like. You are under absolutely no obligation to take a package and often we can help you resolve more minor issues with a single consultation. Please know we are unable to estimate how long it will take for your dog to learn something as all living beings are different!

What training have you had? Please check our trainings in our Abour Us Section :

What methods do you use? To be specific, we use three of the four quadrants in training: positive and negative reinforcement and negative punishment. What does this mean? It means we train without fear or pain. We do not use shock or prong collars and your dog is put in a place of success in terms of learning. Thai means we teach the dog what we want him to do, not simply punish for what he is not doing.

Are group classes or Private consultation best? ? It depends on what you are looking for!
Group classes are to practice generalizing learned behaviour in an environment with distraction. People take group classes to practice skills they want their dogs to do in the everyday, outside world.
Private classes go at your rhythm and enable you to practice things tailored to your exact needs. If you choose a package we can meet you almost anywhere on the island of Montreal to help you generalize and practice those skills! Ex. recall practice on Mont Royal or Frederic Bach park

If you have a puppy, it is very important to take a puppy class to socialize your dog before the age of 16 weeks. If you have many questions before your class, it would be our pleasure to come and give you a private consultation at home!

Are you part of a professional association? Yes, the RQIEC: https://rqiec.com/
Being a member of a professional association is important for a trainer to follow a code of ethics and important for the consumer so they can have proper recourse should they not be satisfied with their service.

Are you a behaviourist? A behaviourist is technically someone who has studied animal behaviour at a recognized university institution. However, this term is use interchangeably to mean a dog trainer that has skills to help modify behaviour. Taken with this definition, yes we are.
*If you have been recommended to see a veterinary behaviourist please check the OVMQ website to find a qualified veterinarian in your area: https://omvq.connexence.com/ext/omvq/tm/repertoire/trouverMembre.zul
